The Vikings on Wednesday placed wide receiver Adam Thielen on injured reserve, ending his season.

A source said that Thielen had surgery on his left ankle. He suffered a high left ankle sprain in the Dec. 5 game at Detroit, then missed two games before returning for last Sunday’s 30-23 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He reinjured his ankle in the second quarter and returned briefly in the third quarter before leaving the game for good.

The Vikings also activated star running back Dalvin Cook off the COVID-19 reserve list. Thanks to the NFL’s change in COVID-19 protocols, Cook was able to return to the roster three days earlier than initially expected.

On Tuesday, the NFL shortened the quarantine period from 10 days to five for all players, whether they are vaccinated or unvaccinated. Cook is unvaccinated.

Cook originally was in line to be activated on Saturday, in time to play in Sunday’s game at Green Bay. His activation Wednesday gives him a full week of practice prior to facing the Packers.

The Vikings also placed defensive end Patrick Jones II on the COVID-19 reserve list and activated cornerback Tye Smith off the practice squad COVID list.
