Lawyers reacted to the news British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell was found responsible by a U.S. jury on Wednesday of encouraging the late financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls.
U.S. Lawyer DAMIAN WILLIAMS IN MANHATTAN
“A unanimous jury has observed Ghislaine Maxwell guilty of a single of the worst crimes possible – facilitating and collaborating in the sexual abuse of small children. Crimes that she fully commited with her lengthy-time partner and co-conspirator, Jeffrey Epstein. The highway to justice has been considerably far too extensive. But, nowadays, justice has been finished. I want to commend the bravery of the ladies – now developed girls – who stepped out of the shadows and into the courtroom. Their courage and willingness to deal with their abuser made this situation, and today’s end result, attainable.”
ROBERT GLASSMAN, Attorney, PANISH SHEA BOYLE RAVIPUDI LLP, LOS ANGELES (REPRESENTED “JANE,” One OF MAXWELL’S ACCUSERS WHO TESTIFIED AT HER Trial)
“The verdict screams loud and very clear–if you make it much easier for another to sexually abuse little ones, you, as well, will be held accountable for your role in that abuse…. The strong ladies survivors of Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse can all rest greater tonight being aware of that the justice program bought it proper…. The jury stayed targeted on what genuinely mattered: Ms. Maxwell performed a important purpose in supporting Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse ladies.”
CARL TOBIAS, WILLIAMS PROFESSOR OF Legislation, University OF RICHMOND Faculty OF Legislation, RICHMOND, VIRGINIA
“I am not amazed that the jury took so substantially time. This was a quite large-profile scenario in which both equally sides were very well well prepared and made sturdy cases. One more rationalization might be that the jury was staying conscientious.
“I believe Maxwell will appeal, as she mentioned she was not testifying for the reason that the U.S. had not proven its circumstance. She would have to clearly show some error in the way the circumstance was experimented with or some jury misconduct, each of which will be challenging to display. From a length, it appeared like the victims were courageous, sympathetic witnesses, who were being offering credible testimony about awful habits.”
JESSE GESSIN, Law firm, GESSIN Trial COUNSEL LTD, SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA
“The verdict is quite stunning, supplied the government’s performance at demo. Witnesses had been unprepared, and some of the a lot more iconic names linked with Maxwell were not introduced at trial. In the end, it could have been that the character of the allegations was just too much for the jury. I would assume any enchantment to aim on jury guidance as opposed to precise evidentiary rulings.”
